Hernia

What is a Hernia? When an internal body part pushes into an area where it doesn’t belong, it’s called a hernia. The most common types of hernia are inguinal (inner groin), incisional (resulting from an incision), femoral (outer groin), umbilical (belly button), and hiatal (upper stomach). If required, there are options for surgical correction, known as Hernia Surgery.

Hiatus Hernia

When a part of the stomach pushes upward through the diaphragm a hiatal hernia occurs. Medications and lifestyle measures may control the symptoms. If not, surgery to repair the hernia may be undertaken.

Gallstones & Gallbladder Pain

Gallstones Symptoms: Gallstones and gallstone related problems may be felt as nausea or right upper abdominal pain. As the gallbladder becomes inflamed, the pain can become severe and continuous. Other symptoms often experienced include, vomiting, nausea, upper abdominal pains, dyspepsia, food intolerances, fat intolerance, heartburn, bloating and even flatulence.

Gallbladder Surgery: If gallbladder surgery is required it is usually undertaken as a laparoscopic procedure (key-hole). This results in a minimal discomfort and quick recovery.

Reflux & Heartburn

Reflux Symptoms: Reflux or GORD is a very common disorder usually causing “indigestion” or “heartburn”. It occurs when the lower oesophageal sphincter (circular band of muscle) does not close properly and acidic stomach contents reflux into the oesophagus.

When reflux occurs, it usually causes heartburn – a painful burning sensation in the chest. Other symptoms include chronic cough, laryngitis, sinusitis, dental erosions, increased salivation and chest pain. Reflux Surgery: Did you know there are many treatment options for GORD including keyhole surgery?

Gastroscopy & Colonoscopy

Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons at Advanced Surgical also provides simple general surgical services such as Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy to complex surgeries for gastrointestinal disease and cancers (stomach and oesophageal). With an endoscope (a flexible tube with a light and camera) your surgeon can view pictures of your digestive tract on a color TV monitor.

For a gastroscopy, the endoscope is gently passed through the mouth and throat into the oesophagus allowing the surgeon to view upper gastrointestinal tract (the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. For a colonoscopy, the endoscopes is passed through the rectum to examine the large intestine (or colon).

The Link Between Weight and Cancers

Being above a healthy weight is a leading preventable cause of cancer, but less than half of all Australians are aware of this link. Watch this video by Cancer Council Victoria.

Weight Loss Surgery (Bariatric Surgery)

Obesity is a medical description of being severely overweight. This may already be affecting your health and wellbeing. Unfortunately many health issues accompany weight gain. These includes heart problems, sleep apnoea, diabetes, joint problems and self-confidence.

Weight Loss Surgery: Weight loss surgery is a proven and effective tool. It’s a fact that, in selected patients, gastric bypass has a 90% chance of controlling Type 2 diabetes without medications. In Australia, commonly performed operations include the adjustable Gastric Band (Gastric Banding), Gastric Sleeve surgery and Gastric Bypass surgery. Our aim is to ensure that you understand the process and help achieve personal health goals.
